Under A Pleasant Garden

Vera Savige, was born in 1894, so she was a little six year old girl in 1900. Her father was a merchant tailor and the family was well off, and had servants. However Vera was not happy. She resented her mother’s disdain for the poor girls who worked for them. She rebelled and decided very early on in life to seek a very different path.
She cut her long hair, and dressed in a style that was radical for the time. She became an atheist, and was a life long member of the Communist party. And, she wrote poetry and short stories, all her life. She was politically active and had very strong convictions. However, her life eventually took a tragic turn as she and her husband battled a Fascist movement in Melbourne in the 1930’s. ~ This book features her poetry mainly, with some context. The larger story is told in the accompanying book “The Rationalists”.
